Jiu jitsu vs. karate for kids

Both teach discipline and respect. The big difference: karate is striking, jiu jitsu is grappling, and that changes how kids practice.

How they're different

  • Karate: kicks, punches and blocks, often practiced in forms (set patterns) and point sparring.
  • Jiu jitsu: no strikes. Kids learn to hold, escape and control a partner on the mat, and practice it in live, controlled rounds.

Bullying

Many parents choose jiu jitsu because it teaches kids to handle being grabbed or pushed down without punching anyone. A kid who can stay calm and get to safety, without hurting someone, is in a better spot at school.

Safety

Without strikes, there are no kicks or punches to the head. Kids tap to stop, and partners let go right away. Classes are grouped by age, so kids train with others their size.

Confidence and fitness

Both build confidence. Jiu jitsu adds problem-solving: every round is a puzzle, which keeps a lot of kids hooked. And it's a full-body workout disguised as play.
