Why it's safer than people think
- No strikes. No punches or kicks.
- Tapping. You can stop at any moment, and your partner lets go right away.
- Control. Moves are applied slowly in training, so there's time to tap.
- Beginner classes. New people learn technique before they spar.
Where injuries come from
Most injuries come from going too hard: refusing to tap, rolling at full speed, or using strength instead of technique. Fingers, knees and shoulders take the most wear.
How to train smart
- Tap early, especially on joint locks.
- Roll at 50 to 70 percent with people you don't know yet.
- Tell your partner and instructor about old injuries before class.
- Rest when something hurts, not just when it's sore.
- Keep fingernails short and clothes clean to avoid skin infections.
Check with your doctor if you need to
If you have an injury or health condition, check with your doctor before starting. Then start at your own pace.
