Is jiu jitsu good for self-defense?

Yes. BJJ teaches you to stay calm and in control when someone is grabbing you or on top of you, and you practice it against real resistance.

You practice against resistance

In many martial arts you practice moves against a partner who lets you. In jiu jitsu you also roll: controlled sparring where your partner is really trying to stop you. That's how you learn what works under pressure.

Many fights end up grappling

Real confrontations often turn into grabbing, pushing and falling. BJJ is built for exactly that: getting up safely, escaping from underneath, and controlling someone without having to hurt them.

Size matters less

Leverage and position let a smaller person control a bigger one. That's one reason BJJ is popular with women and with parents signing up kids.

The best self-defense is avoiding the fight

A good school teaches awareness and walking away first. BJJ is what you have if you can't.
