Two is the minimum, three is the sweet spot
Once a week is a fine way to start, but most people find what they learned has faded by the next class. At two a week, technique starts to stick. Three a week is where most people see steady progress.
Recovery counts
Your first few weeks will use muscles you didn't know you had. Sleep, water and a rest day between classes help. If something hurts (not just sore), take a break and tell your instructor.
A sample beginner week in Redlands
- Monday 7:30pm or Tuesday 6:00pm Fundamentals
- Wednesday 7:30pm or Thursday 6:00pm Fundamentals
- Friday 6:30pm No-Gi All Levels or Saturday 12:00pm All Levels, once you feel ready
Consistency beats intensity
The people who get good aren't the ones who train six days a week for a month. They're the ones still showing up a year later. Start with what fits your life.
Questions
How many times a week should a beginner do BJJ?
Two to three times a week. Twice is enough for technique to stick; three is the sweet spot.
Is once a week of jiu jitsu enough?
It's a fine start, but progress is slow. Two classes a week makes a big difference.
