How long does it take to get a blue belt?

For most adults training two or three times a week, about 1 to 2 years. Consistency matters more than anything else.

The typical range

Blue belt is the first adult promotion, and for most people it takes about 1 to 2 years. Gracie Barra, for example, says a year is the minimum and 1 to 2 years is typical. Under a year is rare.

What speeds it up

  • Training steadily: two or three classes a week, every week, beats five a week for a month and then nothing.
  • Taking the beginner classes seriously: blue belt is about the fundamentals, escapes, guard and control.
  • Asking questions: after class is the best time.

What slows it down

Long breaks, and injuries from going too hard too early. Tap early, train with control, and you'll keep showing up.

What a blue belt means

You can defend yourself against an untrained person, escape bad positions, and hold your own in a roll with other beginners. It's a big milestone, and the first step is your first class.

New adults start in Fundamentals, Monday to Thursday evenings in Redlands. See the beginner classes.
